Mary M. Mathewson age 103, died Wednesday August 19, 2009 at Beloit Health & Rehab under the care of Beloit Regional Hospice. She was born December 8, 1905, in Plymouth Township, Rock County, Wisconsin to the late August W. and Ida (Kettle) Borkenhagen. She was baptized and confirmed at Luther Valley Church. Mary married Lyle Mathewson on May 27, 1925 in Rockford, IL. He died on December 6, 1961. Mary and Lyle farmed for many years and then moved to Beloit in 1951. She was employed by the Beloit College and later the Beloit Corporation and the Beloit Corporation Guest House. She was a dedicated Chicago Cub fan and always had a lovely flower garden. Mary cherished her years at Luther Valley and was a faithful member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Edith (Ralph) Carlson of Beloit, WI and Elaine (Donald) Nelson of Clinton, WI; three sons, Raymond (Shirley) Mathewson and LeRoy Mathewson both of Beloit, WI and Roland (Elsie) Mathewson of Orfordville, WI; three sisters, Wilma Larsen of Janesville, WI, Ida Hillison of Orfordville, WI and Ethel Buckner of South Beloit, IL; twelve grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren, step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kodras, Beloit Regional Hospice and the staff at Beloit Health and Rehabilitation for the care they gave our mother the last three years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sons, Richard Mathewson and Charles Mathewson, a daughter-in-law, Jeanie Mathewson, a grandson, Brian Nelson, six brothers, Elmer, John, Ivan, August, Charles and Orin Borkenhagen.
Mary’s funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2009, in the BRIAN MARK FUNERAL HOME, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit, WI with the Reverend James Hagen of Plymouth United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Plymouth Cemetery, Rock County, WI. Friends may call Sunday, August 23, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home and from 10:00 a.m. Monday until time of service in the funeral home.
Memorials may be given in Mary’s name to Beloit Regional Hospice, 655 Third St. Ste. 200, Beloit, WI and Plymouth United Methodist Church.
